Google Ads or local SEO: where to start?
Google says so in its help pages: local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better natural ranking. Advertising buys a place above, not a better place in the results.
What each does
| Google Ads | Local SEO (profile, reviews, website) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | “Sponsored” slots in search and on Maps | Local results (map and profiles) and organic results |
| Speed | Immediate while the campaign runs | Gradual: weeks to months |
| Cost | Pay per click, budget you set | Free (profile); time or tools for reviews and website |
| When you stop | You vanish from paid slots | The gains stay (reviews, content, profile) |
| Customer trust | “Sponsored” label visible | Stars and reviews visible, often decisive |
| Skills | Set-up, monitoring, regular tweaks | Consistency: up-to-date info, reviews, replies |

Free visibility check
An overview of your Google profile: what is missing to show up better locally. Free.
The free foundation that helps both
- A complete Google profile: right category, hours (including special hours), recent photos, description, website link (see the Google Business Profile guide).
- Regular reviews, asked of every customer, each with a reply (see how to get more Google reviews).
- A clear website with your name, address and phone exactly as on the profile, your services and bookings.
- Keeping an eye on competitors: rating, review count, categories (see local competitor analysis).

When Google Ads is worth it
- You are opening and your profile has no reviews yet
- You are launching a seasonal offer (holiday menu, sales, tourist season)
- You are a tradesperson and one job is worth a lot (emergency call-out, project)
- You are in a very competitive area and want to be seen for one precise search
In every case: set a budget cap, target a precise area, and measure the calls, bookings or quote requests you get. If you cannot measure, you cannot know whether it pays.
By trade
| Trade | Priority | Ads useful? |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant, bar | Profile, photos, reviews, online menu | Sometimes, for a launch or a season |
| Hair or beauty salon | Reviews, online appointments | Rarely needed |
| Tradesperson, emergency call-outs | Reviews, area covered, quote requests | Often relevant for emergencies |
| Shop | Up-to-date profile, hours, new stock | For key dates (holidays, sales) |
| Hotel, B&B | Profile, photos, direct bookings | Depends on season and competition |
What about AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini)?
More and more customers ask an AI assistant for “a good restaurant near…”. These assistants rely on public information: Google profile, reviews, website, directories. So foundation work also helps your visibility in AI answers, whereas an ad does not appear there. Read more: getting recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini.
What Voxtya does (and does not do)
Voxtya does not sell advertising. It works on the foundation: collecting and replying to reviews, a website linked to your Google profile, regular posts and, with the Visibility & insights service, monthly tracking of your rating and reviews against 3 to 5 competitors, with 3 concrete actions. The free visibility check gives a first overview of your profile.
