The maths

Why every tenth of a star takes more reviews.

Your Google rating is an average. The more reviews you have, the more it takes to move it: here is what to remember.

1

A simple average

All your customers’ ratings are added up, then divided by the number of reviews. Google shows it rounded to one decimal place.

48 reviews at 4.2: showing 4.5 takes 22 five-star reviews.
2

The last tenths are the hardest

Going from 4.7 to 4.8 takes far more reviews than going from 4.1 to 4.2. Every 5-star review counts.

31% of customers rule out a business rated below 4.5.
3

Consistency makes the difference

Asking every happy customer for a review, every week, raises your rating without effort, and Google likes recent reviews.

74% of customers only read reviews from the last 3 months.

The prize wheel: your happy customers finally leave their review.

A QR code on the table or at the counter, a review on Google, a small gift to win. Reviews come in from the very first week, and you watch your rating go up.

How does Google calculate a business rating?
It is the average of all the ratings your customers have left, from 1 to 5 stars, shown rounded to one decimal place. For example, an average of 4.46 is shown as 4.5. Our calculator takes this rounding into account.
Why does it take so many reviews to gain a few tenths?
Because each new review weighs less when you already have plenty. The closer your target is to 5, the more 5-star reviews it takes to move it. That is why it is best to ask every happy customer for a review, regularly.
Can I delete a negative review to raise my rating?
No, unless it breaks Google’s rules (insults, fake reviews, conflict of interest): in that case you can report it from your listing. Otherwise, the only lasting solution is to get more positive reviews and to reply calmly to negative ones.
How do I get more 5-star reviews?
Ask at the right moment, when the customer is happy, and make it very easy: a QR code on the table or at the counter that opens your review page directly. The Voxtya prize wheel adds a small gift to win, which makes people want to take part.
Is the number of weeks guaranteed?
No, it is a rough estimate. It assumes 6% of your customers play the prize wheel and 80% of their reviews are 5 stars. Your location, the season and the way you offer the wheel all change the result.
