What is the Google Business Profile description for?

The description is the short “From the business” text shown on your Google profile, in Search and on Google Maps. It is one of the few places on the profile where you speak in your own words: reviews talk about you, categories file you, photos show you; the description explains. A customer torn between two places reads it to see whether you fit what they want: a group dinner, a cut for curly hair, a call-out on a Saturday.

Many businesses leave it empty, or paste a text written ten years ago. The generator gives you a solid starting point in two minutes. It does not replace your own read-through: you know your business better than any tool.

    How does the generator work?

The tool puts together sentences written by hand for each trade, from what you type. It follows the method in our guide to Google Business Profile description examples: who you are, what you offer, for whom, what sets you apart, and what the customer should do next.

    • The plain version gets straight to the point: trade, town, specialities, two strengths and a practical line.
    • The warm version talks to the customer the way you would at the counter.
    • The detailed version uses every strength you ticked, within 750 characters: if the text runs over, the tool drops the least important sentences first.

There is no artificial intelligence behind it: the result is predictable, contains nothing you did not type or tick, and stays within Google’s rules. For the same reason, tick only what is true: a description that promises a terrace you do not have will end up in a negative review.

Three examples made with the generator

Here is what the tool gives for three trades, with details made up for the example. Swap in your own: your name, your town, your real specialities.

    Restaurant, warm version

Welcome to Lea’s Kitchen, your restaurant in York! We love seasonal home cooking and daily specials. You will enjoy homemade dishes with fresh produce, a terrace in fine weather and group meals and private hire. Book by phone or online, it only takes a minute.

    Hair salon, plain version

Studio Curl, hair salon in Bristol since 2015. Specialities: cuts, colour and balayage. You will find colour and balayage and curly and coily hair. Book an appointment by phone or online.

    Plumber, detailed version

Martin Plumbing is a plumbing and heating engineer in Leeds, since 2009. Our specialities: repairs, installations and bathroom refits. We offer fast call-outs, a detailed quote before every job and jobs across the surrounding area. We welcome homeowners and landlords. Contact us for a quote. See you soon at Martin Plumbing!

In each case the trade and town sit in the first sentence, and there is no price, no link and no promise the business could not keep. For more wording ideas, our guide offers description examples sorted by trade.

    Google’s rules to follow

Google publishes clear rules for this field and reviews every edit before publishing it. Text that breaks them can be rejected or removed.

    RuleWhat the tool checks
750 characters maximumThe counter turns red above it, and flags a text that is too short (under 250 characters).
No linksWebsite addresses, “www” and email addresses are flagged. Your website has its own field on the profile.
No focus on prices or promotionsCurrency and % symbols, words such as “discount”, “sale”, “free”, “deal”, “cheapest” are flagged. Offers belong in your profile posts.
No low-quality contentWords in capitals, more than two emojis, a town repeated more than twice are flagged.
Accurate informationPhone numbers are flagged: they have their own field, repeating them adds nothing.
Your business name must stay your real name. Adding “Cheap plumber Leeds” to the name breaks Google’s rules and can get the profile suspended (see Google Business Profile suspended). The description is exactly the place to describe what you do.

Three tips for a description that brings people in

    1. Put the key facts in the first 250 characters

On a phone, the profile shows only the start of the text. Your trade, your town and what sets you apart must be there. The highlighted text in the tool shows exactly what customers see without tapping.

    2. Use your customers’ words

Read your Google reviews: customers describe what they liked in their own terms (“beer garden”, “gluten-free”, “quick”, “friendly”). Those are often the best words for your specialities. A clear description also helps assistants such as ChatGPT or Gemini describe you correctly: our guide to getting recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini explains why.

    3. A fact beats a superlative

“The best bread in town” convinces nobody. “Sourdough, flour from a local mill, open on Sunday mornings” gives three reasons to come. That is why the tool asks for concrete strengths rather than adjectives.

After the description: the rest of your profile

The description is only one field. Categories, up-to-date hours (bank holidays included), recent photos and above all steady reviews weigh more in local ranking. To see in a minute what your profile is missing, run the free visibility check, then read our guide to optimising your Google Business Profile. To compare your profile with nearby businesses, follow our local competitor analysis method.

Read your description again every six months, or as soon as your offer changes: a new service, a new chef, new opening hours. The generator stays free to rewrite it.

How many characters can a Google Business Profile description have?
750 characters at most, spaces included, according to Google’s help pages. Aim for 500 to 700. Only the first lines show before the customer taps “More”: the tool highlights the first 250 characters so the key facts sit there.
What should a Google Business Profile description say?
What you do, for whom, where, and what makes you different: your specialities, your know-how, how long you have been around, and a practical closing line (booking, appointment, quote). Use the words your customers use in their reviews.
What does Google not allow in the description?
Links of any kind, and text that focuses on prices, promotions or offers. Google also rejects low-quality or irrelevant content, such as strings of capitals or gimmicky characters. The tool’s checker flags these cases.
Does the description help me rank on Google?
It helps Google and customers understand your business, which supports relevance. Local ranking also depends on distance and prominence (reviews, rating, links). A good description does not replace steady reviews, but an empty or confusing one works against you.
Is the text written by AI?
No. The generator puts together sentences written by hand for each trade, from what you type. It makes no call to any artificial intelligence: the result is predictable, and it is up to you to read it over and adjust it.
Can I put my phone number or website in the description?
No. Your phone number, website and booking link each have their own field on the profile. Repeating them in the description adds nothing, and a link can get the text rejected.
Should I repeat my town several times?
No. Once, naturally, is enough. Repeating your town or trade to stuff keywords does not improve ranking and looks unprofessional. The checker flags a town mentioned more than twice.
Where do I paste the description on Google?
Open your profile from Google Maps or Google Search while signed in, choose “Edit profile”, then “Business description”. Paste the text and save. Google reviews the edit before publishing it, which can take a little while.
    Is my information saved?
No. Everything happens in your browser: nothing is sent to Voxtya or anyone else, and there is no account to create.
Can Voxtya help with the rest of my profile?
The free visibility check shows what your profile is missing (hours, photos, reviews, description). The Visibility & insights service reruns that check every month, tracks your competitors and sends you three concrete actions. The description stays yours: you write it and publish it.
