How you ask for a review

The rate fills in with the method (cautious assumption). Change it if you know your own.

Your goal
Estimated Google reviews

Cautious assumptions: Nothing 0.3 %, Asking in person 2 %, QR code 3 %, Email after the visit 5 %, Wheel of fortune 6 %. Customers not asked leave unprompted reviews at the “nothing” rate. New reviews assumed to average 4.7 stars.

The maths

Three numbers make your monthly reviews.

Your number of customers, the share you actually ask, and the response rate of your method. The rest is a multiplication.

1

Your customers this month

Customers per day × opening days per week × 4.33 weeks.

80 customers × 6 days × 4.33 = 2,080 customers a month.
2

The ones you ask

On a busy day, people forget. Be honest: one customer in two is already good.

2,080 × 1 in 2 = 1,040 customers asked.
3

The response rate

It depends on the method: a QR code alone does less than a wheel with a prize to win.

1,040 × 3 % (QR code) + unprompted reviews ≈ 34 reviews.

How many Google reviews per month can you expect?

It is the question every business owner asks before trying to raise their rating: “if I start asking, how many reviews will I get?”. The answer depends less on the quality of your work than on how you ask. Happy customers are many, but they do not think of leaving a review: without a request, only a tiny share do. With a simple, regular request, the volume multiplies.

The calculator estimates your Google reviews per month from three numbers: your customers per day (and opening days), the share of customers you really ask, and the expected response rate of the method. It adds the few unprompted reviews from customers you did not ask.

Response rates by method, explained

We chose deliberately cautious assumptions. They are shown under the result and you can change them if you know your own rate.

MethodRate usedWhy this figure
Nothing (unprompted reviews)0.3 % of all customersWithout a request, only very happy or very unhappy customers write.
Asking in person2 % of customers askedMany say yes, few do it once home: the link is not at hand.
QR code on the table or counter3 %The customer leaves their review on the spot, in a few seconds, on their phone.
Email after the visit5 % of customers who receive itThe message arrives at the right time, with a direct link. You need the customer’s email.
Wheel of fortune6 %The small prize makes people want to take part. Same assumption as our earnings calculator.

BrightLocal’s surveys on online reviews show that a large share of customers leave a review when asked. In the day-to-day reality of a shop, between forgetting, lack of time and the phone staying in the pocket, the rate is much lower: that is why our figures are too. Better a nice surprise than a broken promise.

A worked example

Take a restaurant serving 80 covers a day, 6 days a week. It gets about 80 × 6 × 4.33 = 2,080 customers a month.

  • Without asking: 2,080 × 0.3 % ≈ 6 reviews a month.
  • With a QR code offered to one customer in two: 1,040 × 3 % + 1,040 × 0.3 % ≈ 34 reviews a month.
  • With the wheel of fortune offered to everyone: 2,080 × 6 % ≈ 125 reviews a month.

With 48 reviews today, the 100-review goal is reached in under two months with the QR code, against almost nine months without doing anything. The same logic applies to the rating: the faster reviews arrive, the faster your rating moves towards the average of your recent customers.

Which method fits your business?

Few customers a day: tradespeople, garages, practices, B&Bs

Every review counts a lot. Ask every time, when the customer thanks you, and send the link by email after the visit or the booking. With ten customers a week, a few reviews a month already keep your listing alive.

Medium volume: restaurants, bars, hair and beauty salons

This is where the wheel of fortune and the QR code pay off most. A display on each table or at each chair, one sentence from the team at the till, and reviews arrive every week. See our restaurants and salons pages.

High footfall: bakeries, food shops, retail

Visits are short: the QR code must be visible at the counter, at eye level, and the team can point to it while giving change. Even a small rate brings many reviews, because there are so many customers. See our bakeries page.

How to turn the estimate into reality

  1. Pick one main method and stick to it every day for a month.
  2. Prepare the sentence the whole team will say: “If you enjoyed it, a quick Google review helps us a lot.”
  3. Make it easy: a QR code or link that opens the review page directly, with no searching.
  4. Measure: note your reviews at the start and end of the month, then put your real rate back into the calculator.
  5. Reply to every review: customers see their review is read, and others feel like writing. Our review reply templates save you time.

The rules for asking for reviews

Asking for a review is allowed and encouraged by Google. Three rules to keep in mind: ask every customer in the same way; never promise a reward for a positive review; never write or buy reviews. With a game like the wheel of fortune, every participant must be able to play, whatever their rating.

Reviews per month or reviews for a rating: two complementary calculations

This calculator gives you the pace: how many reviews you will get each month. The Google review calculator gives you the target: how many 5-star reviews it takes to go from your current rating to the one you want. Start with the target, then check here how long it will take. For every method in detail, read our guide how to get more Google reviews.

And if you would rather it all happened on its own, Voxtya review collection brings together a QR code in your name, print-ready displays, the wheel of fortune and an email after the booking: €29 a month, 30-day free trial.

How many Google reviews does a business get per month?
Without asking, very few: most happy customers simply do not think of it. We count 0.3 % of customers, a cautious assumption. As soon as you ask, the volume changes scale: with 80 customers a day, 6 days a week, going from “nothing” to a QR code offered to one customer in two takes the estimate from about 6 to about 34 reviews a month.
Where do the response rates come from?
They are cautious Voxtya assumptions, deliberately low: 0.3 % without asking, 2 % for asking in person, 3 % with a QR code, 5 % for an email after the visit and 6 % for the wheel of fortune, the same figure as our earnings calculator. BrightLocal surveys show that a large share of customers leave a review when asked; in real life many forget, hence our low rates. You can change the rate in the tool.
Why ask for “the share of customers you ask”?
Because people forget: on a busy day, nobody thinks of showing the QR code. If you ask one customer in two, the effect of the method is halved. For email, it is the share of customers whose address you have, for example those who booked online. The other customers still leave a few unprompted reviews, counted at 0.3 %.
Which method brings the most reviews?
The one you will actually do every day. The wheel of fortune makes people want to take part thanks to the small prize, the QR code is the easiest to set up, email reaches customers who booked, and asking in person depends a lot on the team. Best of all is to combine two methods: a visible QR code and one sentence at the till.
Is the result guaranteed?
No, it is an order of magnitude to help you decide. Your location, your customers, the season and the way you ask change the result a lot. The most reliable approach is to measure for a month, then recalculate with your real rate.
How is the time to reach a rating calculated?
The tool works out how many new reviews it takes for the average shown by Google, rounded to one decimal, to reach your target. It assumes new reviews average 4.7 stars, which is common when you ask every customer. If your target is above that average, you will need almost only 5-star reviews.
Am I allowed to ask customers for reviews?
Yes, and Google encourages it. Simply ask every customer in the same way, without keeping the request for happy customers only, and never offer a reward in exchange for a positive review. With a wheel of fortune, every participant must be able to play, whatever their rating.
Do I need lots of reviews to rank well on Google?
There is no official number. Google says the number of reviews and the rating count in local ranking, along with relevance and distance. Compare yourself with the businesses in your trade that show up first in your town: their review count gives you a realistic goal, and regularity counts as much as the total.
How is this different from the Google review calculator?
The Google review calculator answers “how many 5-star reviews do I need to reach a rating?”. This tool answers “how many reviews will I get each month, depending on how I ask?”. Use both: the first gives you the target, the second the pace to reach it.
Are my numbers sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser: no data leaves your phone or computer, and there is no account to create and no email to leave. Run as many simulations as you like.
